The Material World

Dorian Gray surrounds himself with beauty: jewels, rich cloth, rare artifacts and, of course, his mirrored reflection; yet does all this collecting protect him from the loss of his soul?  Will he ever be completely safe from consequence?

  1. None of the collecting can protect him from the loss of his soul for he collects to only pleasure his desires. Dorian is consumed with seeking exotic pleasures that he doesnt see that the painting only protects him from physical consequences not from lifes.

  2. Over the years Dorian physical appearance and disposition remains the same- youthful, beautiful, and innocent. But inside him there is constant paranoia and remorse that sneaks upon him when he is alone with his portrait. He sees that maybe this life isn’t what he wanted. Nonetheless, he can’t change the past and instead tries to compensate for his pathetic guilt ridden life by collecting glamorous valuable artifacts. These materials do nothing to stop the deterioration and decay of his soul. He is still unhappy and no amount of man-made items can change that.

  3. Dorian will never be completely safe because the situation makes him seem ill fated and nothing is meant to go good in his life even if he feels he is the most beautiful ceature his beauty is in turn is a curse as well

  4. Dorain Gray is a men who is a men of uncenternty he has a lot going on not know what he want to be or even do he let's object bring his spirt down I think he is trying to impress people who he know that don't even like him or sometimes he don't even know. He really has a lot of guilt and he shows it a lot through out this book. He has a dull life he need to perk up.

  5. Dorian Gray will never be spared from the consequences of the evil acts he has committed. His portrait is absorbing the consequences involving his physical appearance. However, Dorian's soul is being tainted by his actions. He has become selfish and bitter and loves no one, only his material possessions.

Through all honesty dorian is very flashy at the beginning of the novel but when he have lost more importants things and have been faced with his self appearance he is actually hurting inside and in great depression he could be the most eye catching but have the most darkest soul...

  7. Dorian's sad attempt to compensate for his actions through material objects is futile. Inanimate objects do not halt time nor change the past. His attempted avoidance of any consequence has left him with everything to lose.

  8. Dorian can own all the items that many wish to have in life, but without a soul he won't be able to enjoy everything like someone with a soul, so other then not having what matters in life, he has became a bitterness, and selfish man.

  9. Mind to say that I am in agreement to Nathalie's point. With a countless amount of possessions, the soul is not purified by the simplicity of greed. Sibyl's death triggered a sour yet grim outlook within him that chewed him (his soul in particular) apart from the inside and left a piece of him out to rot (the physical being of Dorian). He believes he must take punishment from his possessions. Hence his lack of spirit.

  10. Dorian gray uses his possessions as an excuse not to face himself and his sins. He is later tormented by his self-potrait because he feels that it is reflecting his soul(something that he does not want to see).

  11. Dorian Gray surrounding himself with "beauty jewels, rich cloth, and rare artifacts" does nothing more than a small substitute irreplacable feelings. Dorian uses his warm youthful reflection to counter the emptiness of the dark pit where his soul use to reside.

  12. Dorian uses all of those jewels and riches to sort of hide from his true self. He knows that he looks good from the outside but on the inside he is crushed and tormented by his soul.

  14. Dorian will never be completely safe from consequence because regardless of his materialistic posessions he is not content with himself. His external beauty is only a shield that covers the pain and restlessness he feels within.

  15. None of these material things can protect him from the loss of his soul. Dorian is interested in these fancy jewels and beauty for some missing pleasures that he is missing deep inside. Sooner or later he will have to deal with all the mistakes he's made and they will have a price to pay.

  16. The World created by Oscar Wild resembles our own lives too much to simply cast off as fictions. The Picture of Dorian Gray leaves you with thoughts on art and life and at the same time our own lost innocence. Although a bit depressing, it is oddly beautiful. I fill as if Dorians lost because he chooses to live with the fact of being beautiful forever witch innocently loses himself in his beauty.
